Soweto Derby Head to Head Record

On March 21, 2021, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates clashed in a milestone match. The match between these two was the 100th all-time Soweto Derby. Bragging rights in such a highly anticipated match were up for grabs and the solitary goal scored by Samir Nurkovic meant that Kaizer Chiefs won the bragging rights on the day.

Now as we look forward to the start of the 2021/22 soccer season in South Africa, we just want to take some time in checking out the past head to head results between the two Soweto Giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. As we check out the results, we try and formulate how these two teams will fare in the upcoming season in their attempts to win the league title while at the same time disposing Mamelodi Sundowns, a team which has made winning the Premier Soccer League trophy its daily bread.

Since the start of the 1996/97 season, the Soweto Derby has been played 50 times. In that time, Kaizer Chiefs has the most wins with 14 victorious while Orlando Pirates lags behind with 12 victorious.  24 of the encounters have ended in draws. While this is the case, it’s important to note that the results dating back as far as 1996 may not have a great bearing on matches played in modern times. It is against this background therefore why our focus is on the last two years.

Soweto Derby Head to Head Record in the Past 2 Years

Since March 18, 2018, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have faced each other on 11 occasions. Some of the encounters have been leagues games while the other encounters were domestic cup competitions. The results of each of the 11 encounters are as follows:

3 March, 2018 – League game – Orlando Pirates 3-1 Kaizer Chiefs

A tight encounter which from the first minute which was decided by a flurry of late goals. Match went into half time with both teams on level points but Orlando Pirates had too much for Chiefs in the second period thanks to a Luvuyo Memela brace.

27 October, 2018 – League game – Orlando Pirates 2-Kaizer Chiefs

A match decided in 32 minutes. Chiefs opened the scoring thanks to a Khama Billiat wonder goal. The Chiefs’ goal was however soon cancelled by Innocent Maela while the Vincent Pule strike on the 32 minute mark sealed the fate for Kaizer Chiefs.

24 November, 2018 – Telkom Knockout – Kaizer Chiefs 1-2 Orlando Pirates

Just six minutes from time with the teams level on one-apiece, Orlando Pirates’ Justin Shonga rose to the occasion and put Pirates through to the next round of the Telkom Knockout.

9 February, 2019 – League game – Kaizer Chiefs 1-1 Orlando Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs could only manage a draw with Pirates but that came as a welcome surprise as it prevented Pirates from going 4-straight games with victory against Kaizer Chiefs.

2 November, 2019 – Telkom Knockout – Kaizer Chiefs 2-2 Orlando Pirates

For the second game in a draw, Kaizer Chiefs managed to prevent defeat against Orlando Pirates as the match after extra-time ended in a 2-all draw. Kaizer Chiefs celebrated after the penalty shootout after winning the game 4-2.

9 November, 2019 – League game – Kaizer Chiefs 3-2 Orlando Pirates

In less than a week, the two teams met twice and on both occasions, Kaizer Chiefs came out on top. Chiefs won the game in the 84th minute thanks to a penalty from Daniel Cardoso.

29 February 2020 – League game – Orlando Pirates 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs celebrated once again after defeating Pirates in the league encounter. Lebo Manyama’s goal was the difference and it helped Kaizer Chiefs to complete a league double over their bitter rivals.

31 October 2020 – MTN8 – Orlando Pirates 3-0 Kaizer Chiefs

It was a comfortable victory for Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 first leg semi-final as it defeated Kaizer Chiefs 3-nil thanks to goals from Zakhele Lepasa, Pule and Lorch.

8 November, 2020 – MTN8 – Kaizer Chiefs 0-2 Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates completed the job defeating Kaizer Chiefs 2-nil in the second leg of the MTN8 semi-final. However, the win was a bit flattering for Orlando Pirates as Kaizer Chiefs created loads of chances but was just wasteful on the day.

30 January, 2021 – League game – Orlando Pirates 2-1 Kaizer Chiefs

Orlando Pirates continued its dominance over bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs defeating them by 2 goals to 1.

March 21, 2021 – League game – Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 Orlando Pirates

At the business end of the 2020/21 season, Kaizer Chiefs managed to get a deserved win against their bitter rivals thanks to Samir Nurkovic’s goal in the first half.
